Making Their Voices Heard – A Powerful Friendship Story

Hey Artists!

Did you know that today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day?  It’s a day to bring attention to all of the amazing children’s books available that celebrate diversity. One of today’s book review + craft was inspired by Making Their Voices Heard: The Inspiring Friendship of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe by Vivian Kirkfield.

Making Their Voices Heard: The Inspiring Friendship of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe

This book is a powerful narrative sharing this relationship between Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe. The writer invites my daughters and me into excellent illustrations sharing the bond’s success and these amazing women’s impact on each other’s lives. The book shows conquest and struggle that results in the admiration that two outstanding historical figures fueled. The author’s notes give more detail to these women’s lives, friendships, and impact on American Society. It is a fantastic story to share with others!

3D Paper Craft: Love of Music

Now it’s craft time! After reading Making Their Voices Heard, I wanted to create a craft that illustrates the impact music has on our lives. The result was this 3D craft that’s reminiscent of listening and swaying to your favorite music. I have also included a matching coloring sheet for younger kiddos that may find this craft too challenging. Click the button below to download this FREE “Love of Music” 3D craft and coloring sheet.

Craft Supplies
Step 1

Gather your materials. Click on the green button above to print out the Love of Music 3D craft sheets in the image below. Cardstock paper is best for this craft but copy paper will work too.

Step 2

Let's start with the ladies. Using markers, trace the dark lines of the hair and clothes. Next, color in the images with colored pencils. View the slideshow below for examples.

Step 3

Cut out the ladies! I added a grey line outline around the shapes so that the younger kiddos could follow along easier. Cut out the four strips as well.

Step 4

Using your glue stick, add glue to the edge of one of the strips. Put the edge of the other strip on top and press to seal. Fold the strips over on each other over and over until there's no more to fold. Seal the end with glue. View the slideshow below for examples. Set the springs aside.

Step 5

Color the background. Be super creative here and use whatever colors you like!

Step 6

Take one spring and glue it near the bottom left of the paper. Add glue to the top of the spring and press Ella on top. Next, take the other spring and glue it near the top right. Add glue to the top of the spring and press Marilyn on top. View the slideshow below for examples.

All Done!

Great job! Shake your craft to the sound of your favorite music!

Share your creations with Ao and Tauri on Facebook or Instagram.
